Synthesis and Determination of Earthy-Musty Odorous Compound 2-Methylisoborneol in Lake Waters

Methylisobornol(MIB) was synthesized by using methyl Grinard reagent reacted with natural d-camphor, and identified by mass spectrometry and Infrared spectrometry. Then the synthetic MIB was used as a gas chromatographic standard for the determination. In the study, the seasonal variation of MIB concentration in the Donghu Lake(Wuhan, Hubei) waters was obtained. The results showed that there were three apex periods for the occurrence of MIB during the year from 1995 to 1996 in January, April and September.
